Overcoming ‘Comparison Syndrome’ in the Pole Dance Community

In the pole dance community, it’s all too easy to catch yourself glancing around and comparing your progress to others. Maybe it’s that dancer nailing advanced tricks while you’re still perfecting the basics, or someone whose flexibility seems almost effortless. A little friendly competition can be motivating, but constantly measuring yourself against others? That’s a confidence killer. This is what we call “comparison syndrome,” and trust me, most pole dancers have been there at some point in their journey. At Aerial Fifty Two, we’re all about embracing your own unique path. Your progress is your own, and it’s time to celebrate that!

Here are four ways to kick comparison syndrome to the curb and bring joy back into your pole journey.

1. Focus on Your Own Progress

Instead of measuring your progress against others, focus on your personal growth. Pole dancing is a journey, and everyone moves at their own pace. Celebrate the improvements you’ve made, whether they’re big or small. From mastering a new spin to holding a pose for a few seconds longer than before, it’s your personal wins that matter most.

Keep a journal or video log of your pole sessions. Tracking your own progress over time allows you to see how far you’ve come, which can be a powerful motivator and a reminder that your growth is unique to you.

2. Turn Comparison Into Inspiration

It’s natural to notice other dancers and feel a little comparison, but instead of feeling discouraged, try to reframe it.

Use their achievements as inspiration for your own journey. Maybe they’ve mastered a move you’ve been struggling with, or their style of dancing speaks to you—this can fuel your motivation to keep pushing forward.

The next time you catch yourself comparing, ask yourself what exactly you admire about that person. Is it their dedication, style, or technique? Use that as inspiration to set new goals for yourself without letting it diminish your confidence.

3. Surround Yourself with a Supportive Community

The pole dance community can be a beautiful, uplifting space if you surround yourself with the right people. So, make it a habit to engage with dancers who encourage and uplift you, whether it’s at the studio or online. When you feel supported, it’s easier to shake off self-doubt and embrace your own progress.

4. Practice Mindfulness and Self-Compassion

Learning to silence your inner critic is key to overcoming comparison syndrome. It takes practice but, when you feel those thoughts creeping in, try reminding yourself that your journey is unique and won’t look like anyone elses. Self-compassion goes a long way in helping you accept where you are right now, knowing that growth takes time.

Overcoming comparison syndrome is a challenge that many pole dancers face, but it’s entirely possible to shift your mindset and reclaim joy in your practice.

By focusing on your own progress, using others as inspiration, building a supportive community, and practicing mindfulness, you can keep your confidence intact and enjoy the unique journey that is pole dancing.

At Aerial Fifty Two, we encourage you to embrace your individuality and remember that every dancer’s path is different. So next time you step into the studio, leave comparisons at the door and focus on becoming the best version of yourself!

Happy dancing!
