Building Your Signature Style: How to Stand Out as a Unique Pole Dancer

Pole dancing is so much more than just nailing tricks and techniques—it’s about expressing yourself in a way that’s uniquely yours. As you move forward in your pole journey, you’ll see that every dancer has their own vibe, a signature style that makes them stand out. But how do you find and cultivate a style that truly feels like you?

At Aerial Fifty Two, we believe that every dancer has the power to create their own identity on the pole. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to change up your style, here are four tips to help you discover your unique style so you can stand out as the pole dancer you were meant to be.

1. Experiment with Different Music and Movements

Music plays a huge role in setting the tone for your pole routines. Different songs bring out different emotions, which can inspire new movements and styles. By experimenting with various genres, you can discover what resonates with you and what feels the most natural in your body. Try dancing to a range of music styles, from slow and sensual to upbeat and energetic. Notice how your body responds to each genre and which movements come effortlessly. You might feel a natural connection to fluid, graceful movements or prefer sharp, powerful tricks.  Let the music guide you and help shape your signature style.

2. Incorporate Elements of Other Dance Forms

Pole dancing is incredibly versatile, and one of the best ways to create a unique style is by mixing elements from other dance forms. Whether it’s the elegance of ballet, the fluidity of contemporary, the sharpness of hip-hop, or even the bold moves of breakdancing, borrowing from different dance backgrounds can help you develop something that’s truly your own. Mix n’ Match!

3. Find Inspiration, But Don’t Copy

It’s natural to look up to other pole dancers, whether in your studio or online, for inspiration. Watching others can open your eyes to new tricks, transitions, and combos you may not have considered. However, it’s important to draw inspiration without directly copying someone else’s style.

How to do it: Instead of copying another dancer’s exact moves, ask yourself what it is about their style that speaks to you. Is it their control, their fluidity, or their creativity? Once you identify what inspires you, put your own twist on it. Adapt their moves to fit your unique flow and personality, and over time, you’ll create a style that feels authentically you.

4. Stay True to Yourself and Your Strengths

One of the most important parts of developing your signature style is staying true to who you are. Not every move or style will resonate with you, and that’s okay. The key is to focus on your strengths, embrace what feels good in your body, and express yourself authentically. Pay attention to the moves that come naturally and feel right for your body type, skill level, and personality. Maybe you’re strong at power moves or excel at smooth, fluid transitions. Lean into those strengths, and don’t feel pressured to follow trends if they don’t align with your natural style. The more authentic your dancing feels to you, the more you’ll stand out.

Building your signature style as a pole dancer is an exciting and personal journey. By experimenting with music and movement, blending elements from other dance forms, finding inspiration without copying, and staying true to your strengths, you’ll develop a style that’s uniquely yours.

At Aerial Fifty Two, we encourage all of our dancers to express their individuality and embrace the creative process. So, whether you’re just starting or refining your technique, remember that your unique style is what makes you stand out. Keep exploring and have fun!

Happy dancing!
