Pole Grip Tips & Products That Actually Work
Grip is one of the most universal struggles in pole dance. Beginners and pros alike battle sweat, dryness, humidity, pole temperature, nerves, and even skin chemistry. With so many products on the market (and just as many DIY fixes), it can feel overwhelming to figure out what really works. Here’s an honest breakdown of the most effective pole grip tips, products, and strategies to help you stick when it matters most.
Grip isn’t just about strength, it’s about moisture balance, friction, skin prep, and technique. Your grip can vary day-to-day depending on the weather and humidity, skin hydration, sweat level, pole material and temperature, nerve-induced sweating, hormones, and even the time of day.
So instead of relying on one magic product, the best approach is building a grip strategy that works for your skin.
Popular Grip Aids (and When to Use Them)
1. For Sweaty Hands
✔ Dry Hands
The classic. Alcohol-based, dries fast, great for “wet” hands but can be drying long-term.
✔ Tite Grip
Anti-perspirant creams for chronic hand sweating (hyperhidrosis). Apply 5-10 minutes before class.
✔ Enviro Grip
Tacky powder that helps even when sweating, good for dynamic pole, spins, and transitions.
2. For Dry Hands
✔ Monkey Hands (Sticky or Gluey)
Adds a light tack and helps with static holds. Use sparingly to avoid buildup.
✔ Dancing Dust (Make Me Dewy)
A hydrating spray that adds moisture without making your skin oily. Comes in light, medium, and high (choose based on your climate).
3. For Body Contact Points (Thighs, Back, Legs)
✔ Dancing Dust (Make Me Dusty)
Great for thighs and behind the knee — excellent for climbs, sits, and aerial tricks.
✔ Rosin-based Products (iTac)
Good for cold or dry climates where you need more stick.
Note: Don’t apply rosin if your studio restricts it — it can be hard to clean off stainless poles.
DIY Grip Options That Actually Work
✔ Rubbing Alcohol (70% or 90%)
Use before grip to remove lotion, sweat, or oils. Helps reset your skin mid-class.
✔ Aloe Vera Gel
Great for dry skin that still needs some tack. Let it partially dry before gripping.
✔ A Touch of Hairspray
Creates tacky friction on thighs or backs of legs. Wash off afterward to avoid build-up.
Grip Longevity Hacks (That Most Polers Don’t Know)
1. Keep your skin consistent
Sudden changes (new lotion, new shave, new exfoliator) affect grip.
2. Exfoliate regularly
Smooth skin grips better than flaky skin.
3. Don’t “spot lotion” the same day
Even lotion on your legs in the morning can cause night-class slips.
4. Build natural grip through conditioning
The best long-term grip solution is stronger hands, forearms, and contact points. Incorporate dead hangs, pole push/pull drills, forearm curls and thigh holds into your conditioning to help you rely less on grip products over time.
There is no one-size-fits-all grip solution, and that’s okay. The secret is learning your skin’s personality and having a few reliable products in your bag so you can adjust on the fly. With the right combination of technique, conditioning, and grip aids, you’ll stick your tricks with more confidence, consistency, and power.
